Health and Safety Executive professionals report an increase in fatal accidents

This week, the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) have reported their concerns that for the first time in 5 years, the number of fatal accidents at work has risen.

The BBC website reported on the latest figures published by the HSE, which confirmed that 50 people were killed in workplace accidents during the last full reporting year. This was up from 41 fatalities in the previous 12-month period. An additional 2,298 people were seriously injured in accidents at work during that same period.

Accident compensation for worker hit on the head by iron bar

Whilst assisting the driver of a lorry delivering goods to his place of work, this client was hit on the head with an iron bar and suffered serious injuries which have proved to be permanent and life-changing.

The insurers for the defendant (the delivery company) refused to negotiate an acceptable settlement and our specialist work accident compensation lawyers issued court proceedings in order to secure a successful outcome for our client. However, we continued to negotiate strongly and were eventually able to agree a settlement in excess of £100,000 in work accident compensation, avoiding the need for a costly trial.

HSE reporting on injuries at work for 12 months to end March 2011

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) this week announced that the decrease in non-fatal injuries at work had continued during the latest 12-month period to end March 2011. Figures show that 115,379 non-fatal injuries to employees were reported during the period. However, during the same period, fatalities rose by 16% to 171 from a record low of 147 in the previous 12-month period.

The campaign group Families Against Corporate Killers expressed concern that this worrying trend may simply be a sign that many non-fatal accidents went unreported as employees were concerned about job security.

A worker in the dockyard industry slipped and fell on wet stairs and landed on the edge of the stairs on his kidney. Our specialist work accident compensation lawyers represented this client and were able to secure compensation for this extremely painful injury.

Although his employer (the defendant) admitted liability, their insurers refused to negotiate an acceptable settlement and we were forced to issue court proceedings to protect our client’s interests.
