Siderosis and pneumoconiosis diseases

Siderosis – Welders’ lung

Siderosis – also referred to as welders’ lung - is a pnemoconiosis disease caused by the inhalation of iron particles and is mostly suffered by metalworkers, or workers in the fabrication industry.

Although this disease is usually regarded as benign, in extreme cases welders may also suffer from Metal Fume Fever, a flu like illness.

Notifiable occupational diseases

To make a claim for compensation, you must be able to prove that siderosis has developed as a consequence of your working environment at that time. It is often more than 10 years after you have been exposed to the harmful dust before symptoms of a pneumoconiosis disease appear.

Siderosis is classed as a notifiable industrial disease, and if advised, your employer must report this to the Health and Safety Executive. If you are diagnosed with siderosis, with your permission, your doctor is required to inform your employer.

Not only may you be able to make a claim for personal injury compensation against the employer for whom you were working at the time of your exposure, but you may be able to claim disablement benefit through the Department of Work and Pensions.

However, some types of pneumoconiosis diseases demonstrate specific, individual symptoms, which your doctor will be able to identify.
