Congenital Hip Dysplasia
Congenital Hip Dysplasia is a condition in which there is an abnormal development of the hip; this can result in the instability of the hip joint which in turn can lead to an increased risk of the hip socket being dislocated from the thigh bone.
The condition is usually developed at birth and as it progresses pain can be caused by the wearing away of the joint or ligaments; sometimes the only solution is to have a hip replacement. The condition is more prominent in females than in males.
Causes of Congenital Hip Dysplasia
It is estimated that 1 or 2 out of every 1000 child born may have a hip that is dislocated at birth. The causes are widely unknown and difficult to pin down however it is thought that those most likely to contract the condition include:
- Those with a family history of Congenital Hip Dysplasia
- Babies born in the breech position
- Babies born with other conditions that affect their position in the uterus i.e. clubfoot
- Babies born to women with low levels of amniotic fluid (Oligohydramnios)
New born babies are routinely checked for the condition by midwives and are monitored throughout their early years. Instances where previous compensation claims have arisen involve cases in which health visitors have not carried out sufficient checks and the condition has not been noticed until the child has started to walk and it was noted that they were limping.
