Gynaecology treatment review by Royal Cornwall NHS Trust

Poor medical treatment at NHS Trust Hospital in Truro

Patients at a hospital in Cornwall have had their treatment reviewed following concerns raised by colleagues of a Consultant at the hospital in Truro, part of the Royal Cornwall NHS Trust.

The Trust asked the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to carry out an independent review of Mr Kenneth Robert Jones’ clinical practice and as a result, in early November 2012, over 1500 women were sent letters by the Trust. They were advised that a review of their treatment and care was being carried out and were invited to give feedback on that care.

Gynaecology Outpatient Department

The patients contacted by the Royal Cornwall NHS Trust had attended the gynaecology outpatient department during 2010, 2011 and the early part of 2012. The consultant, known as Rob Jones, had worked for the Trust for 20 years before being suspended in May 2012. Over a twelve-year period, several prior reviews of his standard of care had been carried out but no action had ever been taken. After being suspended he voluntarily removed his name from the medical register and is no longer employed at the Trust.

Specialist clinics for Mr Jones’ patients

All the recommendations of the review were implemented by the Trust and specialist clinics were set up to treat Mr Jones’ patients

In November 2012, Lezli Boswell, Chief Executive of the RCHT, said: “I am deeply sorry for any anxiety, pain or distress caused to our patients. I also want to acknowledge and thank all those staff and patients who spoke out about Mr Jones.

“The Trust is committed to finding out the full extent of the problems caused by this individual consultant’s clinical practice and will take all steps necessary to ensure we do the best by our patients who have received poor treatment or care.”
