MRSA compensation claims

What is MRSA?

'Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus' or MRSA as it is more commonly known is a type of bacterium which is commonly found on the skin or in the noses of healthy people. The bacterium is harmless unless it actually enters the body (normally through a wound or surgical incision) and causes an infection. The severity of the infection can vary greatly from a minor skin infection causing spots and boils to develop or a severe infection of the bloodstream or bones.

MRSA is most commonly contracted in Hospitals or Nursing Homes by the elderly or people who are already sick as both of these groups of people are more vulnerable to developing infections. It has also been found that rates were higher amongst men than women. Although MRSA is resistant to treatment from certain antibiotics, others can be used to treat the condition. Some people do make a full recovery from the infection; although others may be left with permanent scars or disablement from the infection and some people may even die as a result of it.

Preventing the spread of MRSA

Thorough cleaning is very important in the struggle to stop the spread of MRSA. Hospital wards and care homes should be regularly disinfected and hand-washing is very important.

If you must enter an environment where you believe you will be at risk from MRSA, you should cover any open wounds, regularly wash your hands and avoid sharing towels or other personal items with other people in the area.

Care Quality Commission report on NHS Trusts

“One in eight NHS trusts has been told it must urgently improve the care it provides.” That’s the headline published in October 2009 by the BBC News Channel. The assessment by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) showed that more services than ever could be rated good or excellent.

One area highlighted by the CQC as a success, is the rate of infections of hospital-acquired diseases such as Clostridium difficile and MRSA. Both rates had fallen by about a third, despite the hospitals themselves reporting failings in areas of hygiene.
