Scaphoid fractures are notoriously easy to miss and the standard advice to doctors is to carefully review the X-rays of certain wrist injuries a week or so later before it is too late to set the fracture. Despite this every year many are missed. The long-term consequences can be very severe, with early onset arthritis, pain, weakness and additional surgery, and those who claim compensation often end up with very large awards. Other fractures are more difficult to miss, but still it happens and the mistake is not picked up for a few weeks, by which time it is too late.
