Raised Inspection Cover Leads To Compensation Of £1800

A Wax Room Operator from Exmouth in Devon employed by Howmet Limited was awarded compensation for the injuries that he sustained when he tripped over an inspection cover in the floor which had been raised and left open.

Robert Crosbie, aged 58, fell over the inspection cover at his employer’s premises at Kestrel Way, Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter.

Mr Crosbie needed to fetch some oil to continue with his work. He walked to a cupboard which was a short distance away, to where the oil was stored. As he was returning the oil to the cupboard, he tripped and fell onto his knee, suffering a painful injury.

The representatives of his employer, Howmet Limited, offered him £1800 in an out of court settlement which he accepted.

Mr Crosbie says: “I was signed off from work for two weeks, during which time my knee was bruised and swollen. I needed to use a walking stick to get around. When I returned to work I found that the inspection cover had been sealed tightly. My symptoms caused by this accident took three months to recover.”
