HSE report on prosecutions following accidents at work in Great Britain
In the last three months of 2010 many companies or individuals were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for breaches of workplace regulations, and 101 of them were found guilty and fined.
Many of these successful prosecutions involved accidents at work and many resulted in injuries to maintenance workers, or workers injured due to faulty maintenance work.
Successful prosecutions in the last three months of 2010 involved the types of work-related accidents which occur frequently in the workplace but which could easily be avoided if correct procedures, including risk assessment and management, were carried out.
In December 2010 these types of work accidents included:
- a fall from height when a subcontractor fell from a ladder after receiving an electric shock from an unmarked main power channel
- a worker struck by the moving parts of a machine he was maintaining after it was started by another worker
- a worker received serious injuries when he became entangled in a conveyor system which moved unexpectedly whilst he was working on it
In November 2010 these types of work accidents included:
- an accident when a worker fell through a roof light
- a young worker receiving head injuries in a work accident involving the sudden movement of a machine that had not been isolated
- a worker overcome by a toxic gas when working in a confined space
In October 2010 these types of work accidents included:
- an electrician suffering severe burns when working on a live part of a control panel
- a fall from height when a make-shift platform gave way
In addition, a manufacturer was prosecuted for deliberately bypassing guards on machinery and a builder was prosecuted for unsafe roof work, although no accident occurred due to this breach of regulations.
