Naval Dockyard labourer awarded mesothelioma compensation
Our specialist asbestos compensation lawyers secured a six-figure sum in mesothelioma compensation for this client during his lifetime. We brought court proceedings to force the employer’s insurers to reach a satisfactory settlement without delay.
Shortened life-expectancy for mesothelioma victims
Sadly, following a diagnosis of mesothelioma, the client knows that their life expectancy will be drastically cut short. When we are asked for our expert advice in such cases, we make every effort to achieve a successful outcome for our client as quickly as possible and, if requested, during their lifetime. This allows our client the time they have left with their family without the worry of how their loved ones will manage financially when they are no longer there to support them.
Negligently exposed to asbestos
Our client had been employed throughout the 1970’s in HM Dockyard, Plymouth as a skilled labourer. Exposed to asbestos dust as he routinely cleaned pipes, walls and bulkheads in preparation for painting, he was provided with no protective masks or ventilation equipment.
Later he was also exposed to asbestos dust when working in close quarters with workers who would mix dry asbestos with water in the working environment. His overalls were extremely dusty at the end of the day. Indeed he and his colleagues were so covered in asbestos dust that they had to shower before they went home.
No warnings about the danger of asbestos-related diseases
Well aware of the dangers of negligent exposure to asbestos and the preventative measures that they were required to implement, his employer provided no warning of the risks of developing an asbestos-related disease.
Symptoms of mesothelioma
Still only in his late 50’s at the time of the diagnosis of mesothelioma, our client had first felt unwell when he developed a cough. Despite several courses of antibiotics, he failed to make any improvement and was later referred for hospital tests. An x-ray identified fluid in the lining of his lung. He then underwent a drainage operation which eased his symptoms a little.
However, despite courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, his condition continued to deteriorate and, at the time his claim settled, he was unable to carry out even the simplest task at home. He had also incured considerable expense to make adjustments in the home to accommodate his reduced mobility.
