Alimta To Be Made Available On The NHS To Aid Mesothelioma Sufferers
Mesothelioma is a devastating disease, caused by exposure to asbestos, for which there is no cure. It usually leaves sufferers with a very short life expectancy once they have been diagnosed. Alimta is a chemotherapy drug, which, in some cases, can help extend that short period, and improve the quality life.
NICE, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence, had previously ruled that Alimta should not be prescribed across the board by the NHS. Whilst some patients have been able to receive Alimta, many others have not. Just one tragic example of the postcode lottery prescribing which is taking place across the UK today.
The Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Fund, Thompsons Solicitors and others have campaigned for over two years to make Alimta freely available on the NHS. The decision to make Alimta available followed a successful lobby of parliament and a number of appeals. Clear Answers specialise in assisting with all types of asbestos-related diseases and our solicitors, Thompsons, have successfully pursued many mesothelioma claims for victims and their families.
Sufferers of mesothelioma, which more than 2,000 people are diagnosed with each year, will be relieved at the outcome of the campaign. Although the drug does not offer a cure, it buys precious extra time for some sufferers and their loved ones, as well as some relief from the symptoms of mesothelioma.
