Compensation Victory After Tragic Death From Mesothelioma

Clear Answers' lawyers, Thompsons Solicitors have successfully obtained over £50,000 in compensation for the family of a London plumber.

William Springham, died in April 2005 after contracting the fatal asbestos related cancer, mesothelioma. Mr Springham spent a substantial part of his life working firstly for the Ministry of Defence as a plumber at the Woolwich Arsenal and also as a plumber for Ford at the tractor plant in Dagenham, Essex.

Mr Springham noticed that something was wrong after he began to suffer chest pain and breathlessness. He was diagnosed with the industrial disease mesothelioma in October 2004 at the St Thomas' hospital in London.

Dangerous Levels of Asbestos

Throughout his working life the client was exposed to large amounts of asbestos on a daily basis. Shortly before his death Mr Springham recalled a visit to the Woolwich Arsenal site by the Duke of Edinburgh who referred to the site as being a "white elephant" due to the quantity of asbestos.

Mr Springham was also exposed to high levels of asbestos whilst working for Ford. Whilst there he re-called de-scaling eight foot water cylinders from which he had to take out bolts and de-scale them also. The chlorifyers were lagged with asbestos and in removing these from the water cylinders asbestos dust would be dislodged.

Susan Bradley, Mr Springham's daughter explains: "Our dad was such an active, lovely man, liked by everyone. It was heartbreaking to see his health deteriorate in front if us. My brothers and I are devastated that he has been taken away from us through no fault of his own and we're now fighting for justice on his behalf."

Legal Representation

Representing Mr Springham is Lorna Webster from Thompsons Solicitors, she explains: "Throughout his career, William Springham was never provided with a mask or other protective equipment to stop the inhalation of the deadly asbestos dust, nor was he given any warnings about the dangers of asbestos."

She goes on to say: "Too many innocent victims like William Sringham are dying as a result of the negligence of large employees including Ford and the Ministry of Defence. And many more tragic cases will follow, with mesothelioma already responsible for 1,800 deaths each year."
