Thousands of asbestos victims will learn the fate of their compensation claims on the 7th September after a five year battle. Former employees have voted on a 500 page proposal submitted on behalf of Turner and Newall's parent company Federal Mogul.
The proposal, detailing the terms of a possible compensation payout procedure was sent to former employees and relatives of former employees after Federal Mogul went into administration in 2001 and freezing all compensation payments.
Many of the employees suffer from asbestosis and mesothelioma after being exposed to high levels of asbestos throughout their working lives at Turner and Newall factories, which included chemical, engineering, and asbestos cement manufacturing.
Scores of other former employees have died without receiving any compensation for themselves or their families.
Compensation Payouts
Votes are due to be counted on the 7th of September with a possible £36 million in compensation at stake for former Turner and Newall workers, with some claims thought to be worth up to £100,000.
Other people claiming include those who did not work for Turner and Newall but who lived in close proximity to one of their factories therefore being exposed to high levels of asbestos.
Ian McFall, head of the asbestos litigation team for Clear Answers' lawyers Thompsons Solicitors said: "Thursday is an important day in the fight for compensation for Turner and Newall's asbestos victims. It could bring to an end the uncertainty for many families who have been waiting for a long time to know the outcome of their claims. If the majority of claimants vote in favour of this scheme they could be receiving payments in the next couple of months."
