A qualified solicitor, Michael spent several years in Newcastle and South Shields before taking up his current role in our Middlesbrough office. During almost two decades, Michael’s work has covered almost all types of personal injury compensation claims, including road accidents, fatal accidents, accidents at work and occupational disease claims.
Although Michael continues to handle these types of accident compensation claims, over recent years he has handled an increasing number of occupational disease cases, developing a real interest and in-depth knowledge of the risks and consequences of the negligence of employers.

Road accident compensation claim – Motorcycle injury
This client suffered a serious injury to his ankle when he was knocked off his motorcycle by the defendant, who drove his car into him from a side road.
In the months following this road accident, our client underwent many operations to try to correct the damage to his ankle. All were unsuccessful and eventually the limb was amputated below the knee. He also suffered the effects of post traumatic stress disorder and a major depressive episode. Unable to carry out the physical duties required in his profession, his employment was terminated on ill-health grounds and he has been unable to work since.
Although the defendant admitted liability, Michael had to fiercely negotiate to secure a substantial sum in compensation for this client’s loss and injury, which included a sum for his future care as well as loss of congenial employment.
Work accident compensation claim – Manual handling injury
Our client was a nurse whose duties involved lifting patients as well as other heavy objects. When our client suffered an injury, he visited his GP and was referred to a rheumatologist. Examined by the defendant’s occupational health dept following several months of being unable to work, he was eventually given alternative duties which did not involve lifting heavy objects. Medical evidence confirmed his injuries had accelerated a degenerative disease by about 2 years.
The defendant eventually accepted liability on the grounds that they had not provided a suitable and safe working environment, or suitable work equipment, for our client. Michael advised the client to reject several offers, and issued court proceedings, before the other side made an offer of accident at work compensation that Michael felt able to recommend the client accept.
