Mr Mainwaring was admitted to Leighton Hospital, Crewe with a suspected heart attack. A mistake by the hospital resulted in him receiving a massive drug overdose during the course of his treatment and Mr Mainwaring suffered irreversible brain
damage. He died soon afterwards.
His death was a tragedy caused by human error which should have been avoided. An Inquest recorded a verdict of misadventure.
Mrs Mainwairing, his widow, made a claim against the hospital for medical negligence. The NHS Litigation Authority admitted liability and an out of court settlement to pay Mrs Mainwairing £30,000 compensation was reached.
Mrs Mainwaring said: "I am very grateful for the support of expert medical negligence solicitors in helping me to take this claim. The money in no way reflects my family's great loss. At the centre of this tragedy was a hospital error. I hope that lessons will have been learned by the hospital as a result of me taking this claim, so that such a disastrous error does not happen again."
