Compensation Claim Advice For Cycling Injuries

We understand that cyclists can be vulnerable when they are on the road and if you have ever been involved in a cycling accident you will understand what a traumatic event this can be. Clear Answers' expert solicitors specialise in cycle accident compensation claims and all of our clients are treated with the respect and sympathy that they deserve.

Cyclists do not have the protection that motorists have; there is very little to protect a cyclist from sustaining an injury if they are involved in a collision, therefore making them more susceptible to suffering serious injury.

Cycle Accidents

As so many of us fail to wear correct headgear whilst riding a bicycle, serious injuries sustained in cycling accidents are frighteningly common. Even a suitable bicycle helmet is no guarantee that you will escape a head injury if you are involved in a collision with a car, bus or lorry.

Each year 1500 cyclists are killed or injured on Britain's roads. This is just the number of cycle accidents each year that are reported. It is estimated that in total somewhere between 60 and 90 per cent of these types of accidents go unreported. The precise nature of a cycling accident will vary; however the most common causes of injury are listed below:

  • Head injury from impact with the road or pavement
  • Head injuries from hitting objects such as trees and signposts
  • Head injuries sustained as a result of a collision with a motor vehicle

Varying circumstances contribute to the severity of a cycling injury but below is a list of the most typical head injuries a cyclist might sustain:

  • Fractured, split or bruised skull
  • Fractured nose
  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Brain damage
  • Facial scarring

  • 90 per cent of cycle accidents occur in urban areas
  • 75 per cent of cycle accidents happen at or near to a road junction
  • 80 per cent of cyclist casualties are male
  • Approximately three quarters of cyclists killed have serious head injuries

Cycle Accidents - What To Do

If you or a member of your family have been injured as a result of a cycle accident through no fault of your own then it is advisable to obtain prompt legal advice from a solicitor who specialises in cycle accident compensation claims. It is also important that you obtain the details of anyone else involved in your accident as it may be difficult to pursue a personal injury compensation claim without them.

If you are involved in a cycling accident then there are a number of things that you should do if you are not prevented from doing so by your injuries:

  • If another vehicle is involved, write down the registration number and try to obtain any other third party information such as insurance details etc.
  • Obtain the names and addresses of any witnesses

After being involved in a cycling accident it is also advisable to do the following:

  • If you were not taken to hospital at the time of the accident, visit the hospital or your GP if you are concerned about the nature of your injuries
  • Get your bike checked over and get any damage that might have been caused repaired, taking a note of what the damages were for the purposes of any claim you may make

Clear Answers' accident solicitors are experts in personal injury compensation claims as a result of cycling accidents. For some friendly advice contact our client advisors on 0800 783 9019 to see if we can assist you with your cycling accident compensation claim.

Client Testimonials On Successful Cycling Claims

Cyclist injured in 4x4 collision successfully claims compensation for injuries
"In February 2006 I was cycling along a road in South London when a 4x4 car pulled out from a T-junction and knocked me off. The driver clearly wasn't paying attention to the road and as a result I suffered several injuries. As well as cuts and bruises to my body and head, my hip was broken in the fall. It could have been a lot worse.

"Although I can walk, I still suffer with pain in my hip, especially when the weather is cold and I'm outside.

"Shortly after the accident, I decided to seek financial compensation and turned to Clear Answers for their advice and guidance. I'd never sought personal injury compensation before and didn't quite know what to expect. The driver of the vehicle and their insurance company weren't forthcoming and so Clear Answers stepped in to help me.

"They put me in touch immediately with their legal experts, Thompsons Solicitors, who were fantastic. Not only did they explain everything in clear language, they lived up to their promises. Forms were sent on time, they kept me informed and I had the same solicitor throughout my case, who was very good.

"With Clear Answers and Thompsons Solicitors expert guidance, I was eventually awarded £5,500 in compensation."

Avoiding Cycle Accidents

There are various steps you can take in order to minimise the possibility of being involved in a cycle accident. They include the following:

  • Always wear a helmet when riding a bike
  • It is essential when riding a bike that high visibility clothing is worn.
  • Ensure that you have front and rear lights; this increases your chances of being seen by motorists.
  • Make sure that your bike is properly and regularly maintained. For example check that your brakes function properly, this can greatly reduce the chances of you being involved in an accident.
  • Be aware of potentially hazardous situations and conditions such as road junctions, narrow roads with parked vehicles, and poorly maintained roads which might affect your stability or balance.
  • Cycling alongside motorists increases the risk of cycle accidents so always be aware of the surrounding traffic in case you need to take evasive action.
  • Always make your intentions clear and in good time when turning or pulling out to overtake or avoid obstacles.
