According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) approximately one quarter of cyclists killed and about one third of cyclists injured are children. Other cycle accident figures include:

• 90 per cent of cycle accidents occur in urban areas
• 75 per cent of cycle accidents happen at or near to a road junction
• 80 per cent of casualties resulting from cycle accidents are male
• Approximately three quarters of cyclists killed have serious head injuries

20 mph speed limits reduce road accident casualties by 40%

According to the British Medical Journal, a report published in December 2009 found that the introduction of 20 mph speed limits in some urban areas of London has resulted in a reduction in road accident casualties of over 40%.

Avoiding cycle accidents

There are various steps you can take in order to minimise the possibility of being involved in a cycle accident. They include the following:

• Always wear a helmet when riding a bike
• It is essential when riding a bike that high visibility clothing is worn.
• Ensure that you have front and rear lights; this increases your chances of being seen by motorists.
• Make sure that your bike is properly and regularly maintained. For example check that your brakes function properly, this can greatly reduce the chances of you being involved in a cycle accident.
• Be aware of potentially hazardous situations and conditions such as road junctions, narrow roads with parked vehicles, and poorly maintained roads which might affect your stability or balance.
• Cycling alongside motorists increases the risk of cycle accidents so always be aware of the surrounding traffic in case you need to take evasive action.
• Always make your intentions clear and in good time when turning or pulling out to overtake or avoid obstacles.
