Asbestos Exposure Through Cleaning Overalls

Asbestos-Related Personal Injury Compensation Claims

It has been accepted that an asbestos-related condition such as mesothelioma may be contracted from exposure to asbestos dust or asbestos fibres from contaminated overalls or other dirty work clothes. If you were exposed to asbestos due to washing dirty work clothes that your husband, partner or other relative had brought home, you may have a claim for personal injury compensation if you later suffer from an asbestos-related disease.

The Development of Asbestos-Related Diseases

For those who do develop an illness as a result of asbestos exposure, it often takes decades for the illness to start after the asbestos exposure. The average interval between inhaling asbestos fibres and the onset of symptoms is around 35 years and can be as long as 50 years or more. The shortest latency period is between 10 to 15 years. Therefore any recent asbestos exposure within the last ten years will not cause any immediate symptoms or illness. The chance of developing an asbestos-related illness from a one-off incident of low level exposure is not impossible but very unlikely.

Although it has been known for many decades that asbestos-related illnesses resulted from exposure to asbestos fibres, it became widely known from about 1965 that mesothelioma could be caused by even a small level of exposure. In order for an asbestos-related compensation claim to succeed you would have to show that the asbestos exposure from dirty overalls, took place after 1965.
