Occupational asthma caused by enzymes

What is occupational disease?

Irrespective of which irritant is involved, occupational asthma is the name given to the onset of asthma or asthma attacks caused or encouraged by environmental conditions in the sufferer's place of work.

Asthma attacks are frequently initiated by some kind of external irritant such as enzymes. Asthma itself is a condition causing a disorder in the sufferer's breathing. Asthma is brought about by a narrowing of the airways. The condition is reversible over short periods of time either spontaneously or as a result of medical treatment.

How are enzymes found in the workplace?

Asthma, if hypersensitivity induced by exposure to the enzymes in the workplace, will normally only develop several weeks or months after initial exposure takes place.

Asthma caused by enzymes is an increasingly common health problem for workers as they are used increasingly for a wide variety of purposes. One common example is their use in detergent powders. As with many respiratory irritants, they can cause skin irritation too if proper precautions are not taken to prevent contact.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations

The COSHH Regulations, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, are detailed regulations designed to protect workers from negligent exposure to harmful materials such as chemicals and other substances in the workplace. Under these regulations, the employer has a duty to remove or reduce the risk of exposure to his employees.

Anyone who has, or suspects they may have, experienced exposure to an irritant which has brought about or heightened the onset of asthma in the course of carrying out their work, may be entitled to compensation for asthma.
