Work accident compensation for employee who slipped and fell downstairs

A worker in the dockyard industry slipped and fell on wet stairs and landed on the edge of the stairs on his kidney. Our specialist work accident compensation lawyers represented this client and were able to secure compensation for this extremely painful injury.

Defendant admitted liability for this slipping accident

Although his employer (the defendant) admitted liability, their insurers refused to negotiate an acceptable settlement and we were forced to issue court proceedings to protect our client's interests. However, prior to the trial, after having advised our client to reject an initial offer, we secured an acceptable sum for his pain and discomfort.

Slipping accident injury

Our client had been severely winded by the fall, and was in immense pain. It was some minutes before he could move and he was then taken to hospital for tests. These revealed that he had suffered no permanent damage to his kidneys but he was in considerable pain and discomfort for the time it took to heal, and was unable to take part in many domestic and sporting activities during this time.

Risk assessments following the accident at work

When he was able to return to work, our client noticed that several measures had been taken to ensure there was no risk to other employees in similar situations. When he had entered the building from outside, his feet had been wet, and the combination of this and the slippery stairs (caused by the paint used) had caused his accident. Management have since installed wipe mats inside the entrance door, and non-slip strips to each of the steps. Had these been in place prior to our client's accident, it is highly likely that his injuries would have been avoided.
